BIOGRAPHIES
Joy Shillingsburg
Joy is a lifelong educator who served as the Director of Youth and Outreach at St, John’s Episcopal Church in Wake Forest for more than a decade.
Prior to that, she spent 15 years as a classroom history teacher outside of Philadelphia and in the Wake County Public School System. Her commitment to teaching historical truths and how those truths have the power to liberate and transform lives and society has been a through line of her work.
Joy founded Wake Forest Community Table after building a meal distribution program with community partners that started in 2017. This thriving nonprofit has served more than 26,000 meals since 2020 and has connected diverse members of the community to each other through quarterly gatherings that explore the history, laws, personal stories and the systems that necessitate the twice weekly meal distribution.
Joy earned her master’s degree in history education at Villanova University and loves biking, hiking, traveling and podcasts almost as much as reading!
